Playtest is in progress for GURPS Spaceships volumes 3 and 4. Unfortunately life's busy enough that I had to bail out from being part of the playtest this time. Sigh. I received playtest credit for the first two (and there's even a small text box in #2 that I wrote most of) but there's too much else going on for me to do any real testing. Part of it is that I've gotten away from hexgrid gaming and serious number crunching for RPGs over the years. Ten years ago I would've been all over this.

A few days ago the kids were playing band, using the living room couch as a stage. Maggie said, "Jamie falls down so he should be the drummer." Dunno where she got that from. We make bagpiper jokes in this household.

I've been pretty happy with the local Pep Boys auto repair shop. Usually. Sunday I took the van in for maintenance, inspection, and brake work. They reported it was ready Monday afternoon. When I picked it up Tuesday the service mentioned "You might need a jump." Tried to start it. Battery was stone dead. I pointed out that this was the same battery that was just fine when they drove it from the parking lot to the bay and did the 40 point inspection. I got a free battery. I'm just boggled that the guy thought I'd drive off in a vehicle with a dead battery in the first place.

My SCA armor is at Pennsic War. It's not mine any more. I passed it on to Louis, who I met at one of [livejournal.com profile] mostuff's parties. He's a student of Brian Price and needed some SCA-legal gear to join him at the war (they'd been doing historical styles). He came over to pick it up and we hauled the deeply-buried duffle bag out of the garage. I was surprised by how little rust there was, given that I haven't done anything with it in years. So Louis now has a set of half-plate, a light shield, and a pell. This is a Good Thing. It's a shame to have all that stuff sitting around unused, and if I had the time, energy, and motivation for heavy fighting I'd be putting it into something else.

I still feel a bit wistful about it.

I'm not into enforcing gender roles on my kids. But when I see a 30x50 rug with a pirate map on it, then, yeah, my son gets a present from the hardware store.

. . . for my SCA friends.

Anybody know the proper way to blazon a crying wolf?

If you're wondering if this has anything to do with yesterday's emergency doctor visit, followed by spirited running about at playtime, why yes it does.

My regular service to the SCA is running the boffer tourney at the Baronial events. This has sometimes wound up being the only adult trying to control two dozen kids, and two years I completely lost control of 'em and was bailed out by the Kingdom officer (one of the tip-offs my depression was getting bad). This year I had just over a dozen, plus one adult and a few kids helping. Not to mention I had my act together. So it came off fine, got 'em through in good time, clean fights, and the kids had a good time. Actually managed to give away some of our steadily-accumulating prize pile--the Baroness came to each age group's final fight and gave prizes then, instead of waiting for closing court when the kids've gone home.

Laura came by for a couple of hours toward the end of the day and got to chat with people w/o getting wiped out. We'd been hoping to have some friends drop by afterwards since some of them don't get to our area often, but it didn't work out. Sigh.

A new snippet of my favorite novel-in-progress got posted over the weekend, and it looks like the ultimate utopia is about to hit the fan.

Took Laura out to lunch to celebrate finally getting an interview out of the LA area. Fort Worth is a long way from so we'd be pulling up a lot of roots, but we know some folks there so it could work out well. Hopefully it'll work out well.

I skipped fighter practice last night. I was going to go and bring my tools to work on my armor there, but Laura wasn't feeling that great so I stayed home.

My hard suit needs a fair amount of work. Fighting has been an off-and-on thing for me and it's taken a while to get the suit to fit decently. I've tried a bunch of different straps for the legs, shoulders, vambraces, etc. It's finally coming together (four years after I authorized) but it still gives me some trouble. Stuff breaks, some parts need to be reworked, and some of the stuff I’ve changed needs to be fiddled with some more. Plus I have to fix a couple of problems to get tourney-legal.

A few days ago I finished repairing my camail, sitting up in the wee hours watching Fellowship of the Ring with the pliers in my hand. Yesterday I went out to the garage and fixed the wrap plate on my left leg, which had been hanging loose and interfering with the knee. Then I brought my leatherworking gear inside and started on adding a piece to protect the back of my hand.

So I may not be fighting in practice but I’m getting some stuff done toward fighting.

Ouch

I went to fighter practice last night. Was doing pretty good, got complimented on being more agressive than I had been. I took one really hard whack on the shoulder and had to pause a moment to catch my breath. Finally stopped the bout when my glasses fogged over from sweat.

So Ungust and I walked back to the sideline, chatting, and noticed that the tie holding my shoulder armor in place had broken. I carry some rat belts in my duffle for quick fixes, so Ungust fixed it for me so I wouldn't have to unsuit.

But then I noticed that when I held my arm straight down, my shoulder hurt. And if I brought it up cocked for a blow, that hurt too. So after about ten minutes of testing my range of motion and hoping it would start feeling better, I called it quits for the night. Sigh.

The amazing thing for me is that I hardly noticed the pain until my adrenaline level went back down. It's a wonder we can acknowledge blows at all out there.
