Haven't really been posting personal stuff lately--the rest of the world has been more interesting to talk about--but thought I should catch up.

The weekend before last we were still resting up from that nasty bug. [livejournal.com profile] jazz007 and [livejournal.com profile] kd5mdk came by to visit. We were glad to see them but didn't do a whole lot. Mostly we all sat around and read. They're kinda like family that way. That Saturday I went to [livejournal.com profile] arcbat and [livejournal.com profile] brigand13's post-Gencon party. Got introduced to Werewolf, which is an interesting live action game. Also met [livejournal.com profile] sadie_burdock08, [livejournal.com profile] shadeau_jed, and lots of other browncoats. [livejournal.com profile] arcbat and [livejournal.com profile] brigand13 had snagged a copy of the Serenity RPG for me, so I got to obsessively pore over that for the next few days.

This got alternated with trying to twist [livejournal.com profile] bkseiver's arm into coming up here to wait out the hurricane. She sat it out, and she and [livejournal.com profile] phoenixsinger are fine so I figure she's entitled to say "I told you so" next time we see her.

Not to be left out of new Serenity stuff to enjoy, [livejournal.com profile] celticdragonfly took [livejournal.com profile] sandy_tyras to see the free preview of the movie.

This weekend also started with some reading. We got the Serenity novelization and Visual Companion at Lone Star Comics (who needs Borders? The geeks are well served by LSC). The SOVC is great. Lots of raw material from Joss on what he thinks of it all and what he's trying to do. Plus the full script including bits cut later. And lots of lovely, lovely pictures.

Not, alas, the pictures I most wanted--the two views of the 'verse that could settle the map argument among the RPGers. One system? Many? How spread out? Joss doesn't really want to tell us, so we have to scrutinize the dropped crumbs of clues for the answers we want. Wish I'd asked [livejournal.com profile] celticdragonfly to check some of the key points in the moview to see how they matched the books, but I'll have to do it myself when it's released. Assuming I can pull myself out of the story enough to check background details . . . that may have to wait for the DVD.

The rest of this weekend went to cleaning. Lots of housecleaning, we'd let it slide while we were sick and needed to catch up. Monday went to the garage. We had dozens of boxes stacked up in there, some had been through more than one move with us already. So I went through them all and did a rough sort of keep/throw/give. [livejournal.com profile] celticdragonfly did the detailed sort through of the clothes to figure out what we wanted to keep for future kids and what we could give to the refugees. I had a lot of old work clothes that are in good shape but too small for me now. Those got donated. If I ever lose the weight (ha!), I can buy new clothes. Plus a lot of stuff was just trash. We did find a number of "that's where that was" items, so they come into the house. When the dust settled we'd gotten rid of a third of the boxes. Today I took a big pile of clothes and toys to one of the donation drop-offs. Hopefully they'll be useful for someone.

I am assuming we will be going to see this multiple times, probably mostly taking turns. I'm sure you can see it enough times to start going for background details. I was noting some interesting ones on Wednesday, and that was only my 2nd time.

I did sort out stuff for the current kids' future - i.e., pants and overalls and such that look to be the size Jamie will be this winter. But that's pretty much it. All the small baby stuff I came across went to the refugees.

But then I didn't come across any of the extra special sentimental stuff, like the Sweet Pea outfit, those are stored somewhere else.

We desperately needed something, well, not precisely happy, but really entertaining and absorbing, so The Husband and I are re-watching the Firefly DVDs.

D@mn, that's a FINE piece of television.

[WISTS]

Tell us again that the film is going to live up to our expectations?

Depends. If you expect another episode of the TV show, or to see your fanfic up on the screen, or your OTP achieve bliss . . . prepare for disappointment.

If you expect Whedon to rock your world with true emotional intensity, oh yeah.

Mmmmmmm Whedon.

I wonder what would be the reaction these days to my youngest brother-- intelligence in the genius range, but he wouldn't/didn't speak at all until he was three, and launched immediately into complete, grammatically correct sentences. There was pretty much no such thing as speech therapy in the late '60s.

When asked, he said that he simply didn't have much to say.

Hi there. I wandered in from your wife's journal.

Hi, there, Karl let me know you wandered in. That's nice. He's sweet.

People tell me stories like the one of your brother's all the time, when they hear Jamie's getting speech therapy and he's delayed. They told me them with Maggie, who was delayed and who has made fantastic gains with therapy - I think she's ahead now. They told me them with Brendan, who turned out to be autistic, and should have gotten more help earlier. So I figure hey, if at three he starts talking in complete sentences, I'll be thrilled. But I'm going to get him help, just in case.

Right now he has NO words at all - he doesn't even say "no" any more. He doesn't say Mama, I can't even get him to repeat it. He can communicate some things, but not verbally. And there are things he'd want to say. This afternoon he threw a prolonged fit, I finally figured out he was thirsty. But since as it happened there was no sippy cup in the living room for him to hold up to me, he couldn't communicate that he wanted a drink. That was bad.

See, that's just it-- I don't think there were objective (for lack of a better word) standards to be able to tell if my brother was simply being obstinate (which in retrospect, he was) or whether he was actually delayed back in 1965-1968.

Y'all are doing the right thing, and I've always thought so.

Ah, I see. Thanks.

It's worked out very well for the kids, especially with the ECI program here in Texas. They come to our house, and it really works well.
