I do have one quibble. "$300 fine" implies breaking a law. A 'fee' or 'mandatory fee' would seem to fit better? To me, a fine implies that the government is enforcing the actions, a fee implies that company writing the app is enforcing it, with a really draconic user agreement.
That's a fair point. I contemplated expanding on it, but wanted to get on to the action of the story. People will be casual in their usage, talking about being "fined" by a bank when it's technically a service fee. I've done that when cranky over something. Since that bit is from "George's" viewpoint, who's a young guy not up on the distinctions, I went with the simpler word. The real message I wanted to convey is that he'd be punished if he stood up the young lady, not the exact mechanism.
