I went to fighter practice last night. Was doing pretty good, got complimented on being more agressive than I had been. I took one really hard whack on the shoulder and had to pause a moment to catch my breath. Finally stopped the bout when my glasses fogged over from sweat.

So Ungust and I walked back to the sideline, chatting, and noticed that the tie holding my shoulder armor in place had broken. I carry some rat belts in my duffle for quick fixes, so Ungust fixed it for me so I wouldn't have to unsuit.

But then I noticed that when I held my arm straight down, my shoulder hurt. And if I brought it up cocked for a blow, that hurt too. So after about ten minutes of testing my range of motion and hoping it would start feeling better, I called it quits for the night. Sigh.

The amazing thing for me is that I hardly noticed the pain until my adrenaline level went back down. It's a wonder we can acknowledge blows at all out there.

Oh, yeah..... One of the worse parts of being a chirurgeon is trying to convince someone they really need to call it a day, especially when they're amped up from the adrenaline. The usual trick for this is:

"Okay, you want to fight? No problem. You know, it's a pretty hot day though. Why don't you go sit in the shade for a minute or two and drink some more water. I've got some zip-ties/duct tape that you can use to patch any problems with your armor, before hand, here you go." (I then try to send either a child waterbearer or a pretty/cute young thing over to make sure he/she drinks.)

After a few minutes, the adrenaline wears off, and the fighter starts to notice the aches and pains from the injury or heat exhustion, at which point they start to think "You know, maybe going back out there today(or this round) isn't such a great idea. Why don't I sit here in the shade/head back to my camp and lie down for a while......"

This is commonly referred by chirurgeons as "leech fu".

Pain is your friend! Pain is GOOD for you.

Seriously, you should start taking an icepack of some sort with you to practice to put on areas like that immediately.
