Observing Memorial Day

We've had a lovely weekend (see celticdragonfly for all the details). We finished it this evening with a quiet observation of Memorial Day. We gathered the kids together and I explained that we take this day to honor those who died to keep us free. Then I read the Gettysburg Address to them. This was really aimed at Brendan, it'll be years before the other two understand it. I'm not sure how much he understood--he asked "why" at one point but I'm not sure if that was a real question or an attempt to simulate paying attention. But I'm glad we did it, and I think we want to make a family tradition of observing the holiday this way.

What a lovely idea. One of the benefits to moving to Pennsylvania will be the plethora of battlefields nearby. Allan loves to explore battlefields and we will be able to tramp around. An added benefit is that since Dave & myself both had ancestors who fought in the Revolutionary War these places are somewhat personal to us. Dave also has an ancestor who fought in the Civil War there as well...most of my ancestors (that I know of) avoided the war by hiding out...and those that didn't fought in the south.
