The folks at Winds of Change pointed out New Orleans has a higher homicide rate than Iraq. Clearly we're going to have to send more troops to Louisiana to get things under control. Probably at least an infantry division. Actually getting things stable enough allow free and fair elections might take more . . .

Oh! Willyou cross post this over at the club? ; )

Great link. It's amazing how warped liberal perspective is on this war. You don't see the senate grilling the Gov. of Louisiana...

Ouch. I had heard that American cities are dangerous, but that dangerous?

Generally, no. But it's a big country and that's one end of the bell curve. Plus New Orleans is a major entry point for the drug trade so there's "business-related" homicides. Not evenly spread through the city, either. I've been to the tourist areas and seen nothing nasty, but the areas the cops don't care about get really bad.

For comparison, dig out a by-city list of Germany's homicide rates and compare the worst to the average. I suspect there's some places you wouldn't visit alone.

Ya'll have to bear with us in Louisiana. You see, we have a larger percent of our National Guard currently in the Middle East than any other state. In fact, we burried 8 guardsmen just last week - the highest loss of any state in one incident in history. So, if they'll just send our fellows home, we'll see what we can do about Sin City.

*chuckle*

The comments, and the back and forth in them, was pretty interesting. (And once again places me in this weird middle ground where I don't approve of X, Y, and Z, and I'd approve of Q but for how it was handled -- but for [insert noun]'s sake, once we've started, we need to finish and not run out on the people whose lives we turned upside down. *sigh* The middle ground is not a happy place.)

Or for that matter "Les Tarterets", or the French Ghetto. Call in the U.N. observers!

In all seriousness, though, Dalrymple's description of "La Zone" is disturbing. The French have a tiger by the tail and I rather expect they know it.

It rarely is, you know. Even when you're right, everyone's still torqued off at you!

I did some research, and the average homicide rate (per 100,000 people) in Germany in 2003 was 3.1. Most dangerous city was Bremen with 8.8...

Well, I guess I should stay out of the darker corners of Bremen at night, and I should probably be fine.
