Interesting meme from [livejournal.com profile] telophase:

I love looking at people's icons, but I don't always *get* them - I often wonder stuff like, "Who's that guy?" or "Where's that quote from?" but I tend not to ask, for various reasons. So come on, here are my icons. Pick one (or more!) you're curious about, and I'll try to explain it. Or at least explain what I like about it.

I'm curious about the anvil and the hawk. I LOVE the Bill of Rights one :-)

The anvil works on a few different levels. First off it's a religious symbol for me--I'm on the path of the Smith God. I want to make useful things. That ties into my profession as well so I use it for work stuff. And lastly it's a warning to anyone wanting to out-stubborn me in a political argument. It can be done, but it's not easy. :-)

The hawk is my new politics and war icon. I don't want to keep waving the campaign poster icon about, I'm not happy enough with the guy to use that except for the election. So I wanted to have something that would represent my views. "Hawk" is a better label for me than anything else out there now. "Conservative" doesn't fit me at all, and "libertarians" are split so many different ways it's not very useful these days.

Thanks. I've never used it in argument, actually. But it's nice to have it just in case I need it.

Tell me what the Firefly carry you one means to you.

The "Shiny" one, please? What's that one about?

There's two sides of it. One is refusing to give up, trying to keep going as hard as you can regardless of the burdens. The other is being the one to help somebody who needs it and carry them where they need to go.

I urge you to run, not walk, to your nearest source of DVDs and get the "Firefly: the Complete Series" set. It's a wonderful science fiction show about a ship's crew trying to earn (or steal) whatever it takes to keep flying. Think of Guppy and his fellow Jacksonians operating on the fringes of inhabited space.

Oh, they're making a movie out of it, coming out this September.

One of the slang terms in the culture is "Shiny!" It's the same as "swell" or "cool" or "dope" in their day, meaning "This is good!"

Interesting. I see it much the same way but stronger, taking into account the special relationship between the brother and sister. He gave up everything in his comfortable life to save her, not because he wanted anything from her, just purest familial love.

I'm glad you found it useful. :-)

See, that's one of the things that had left me wondering about it. The PHRASING is from The Message, and is used between an old war comrade and Zoe and Mal. But the pics are Simon and River.

So what kind of post are you likely to use it with?

Hmm. Got me. Well, Mal isn't trying to sleep with Zoe either, theirs is a relationship of platonic love and mutual respect.

I have the set but have been rationing it carefully, allowing myself one episode at a time at long intervals. Sigh.

The darn film is DONE but studio business hangups have pushed all Universal releases back six months, so it comes out in September rather than the originally-scheduled April. Or maybe they got cold feet about opening in the same season as the last Star Wars, Batman and Harry Potter.

Another slang usage I appreciate is "rape" instead of "the f word", which makes awfully good sense to me. The simple sex act is not an intrinically bad thing, but rape certainly is! And the world "rape" is not [yet] prohibited by FCC potty-mouth language rules.

Offering sympathy or encouragement to someone having a tough time.

Yeah, it's the old saying Tracey used to get Mal and Zoe to take care of his trouble. But I think the best application of it in the series is Simon carrying River away from her troubles.

And back then the anvil was the default icon . . .
