I've been following the controversy over Terri Schiavo but haven't formed a solid opinion. It's just too hard a case for me to get a grip on. But various people on my flist have been sounding off, sometimes on minimal research, so I'm offering an MD's analysis of the available medical data in the hope this may improve the heat to light ratio.

Yeah, I read those. It's a tough case; I have no idea what her actual medical state is. Still, I object to the federal government interfering in a matter that has already been tried twice.

Did you read the comments on that blog? Someone in the comments suggested that it's possible and likely that the bone damage is due to her bulimia (that is, falls because of bad nutrition plus the process of violently vomiting).

Thanks selenite. You just reminded me of something important. Watching the Schiavo case unfold has made me determined to get a living will, even though most of my immeadiate family have already been given my opinions on levels of hospice care.

I don't trust just telling everyone anymore...
