I'm not the usual kind of tourist New Oreans gets, but I loved the D-Day Museum. I only got half-way through it when we were last there--I was going through all the details and the rest of the family was done with the whole thing and wanting to leave just as I got to the Pacific Theatre side. I've wanted to go back but haven't had the chance. With the floods I figured I might have lost my chance (even if most of the exhibits could handle being soaked in salt water). But they're reopening the museum already, after repairing a quarter-mil in looting damage (but no flood damage). We'll have to see how hard it'd be to get there when I'm in Baton Rouge for the holidays.

We both loved that museum, as well...

Check out a wheelchair when you get there. And bring a crochet project or a book for while you're waiting for him to finish a room. That said, have fun!

Guarded the museum

There was a news story on the veteran who stayed there through the storm to guard the museum. He said he could hear looters breaking into the gifts shop, and shots being fired outside the building. He feared for his life, and stayed on the second floor or above. When he had to sleep, he took no longer than 15 minute cat-naps in a hidden storage room. Nothing was taken from the priceless displays, but he denies that he is a hero for saving the museum.
