One of the computer accessories I want the future to deliver real soon now is a PC heads-up display. That way I can sit there and get a huge high-resolution screen without hauling around a couple square feet of monitor wherever I go. I'm not the only one wanting it--in the Serenity deleted scenes the Operative wears glasses with a HUD as he reviews Inara's dossier.

It might not be that far away. A company is marketing a HUD for video iPods.

Actually used something like this in the lab at my former employer. I suspect it's going to take the prices coming down for them to get more mainstream though.

I want one of those too.

I'd also like an affordable HUD for my car.

The article I read about those said they were $600! Maybe when it's a bit more affordable...

How does you eye focus on something that close?

The focus can be adjusted to whatever you want, including infinity(ie, the screen doesn't show an "A", it shows what an "A" at that distance would look like at the intermediate point where the screen is). So you'd have to calibrate it to your eyeglass prescription to make sure it's matching the right distance.

I've been maintaining for a while now that clunky human-interface hardware is driving the form factor of electronics. I don't want to have to decide between interface data density and portability.

HUD, holographic projection screen, whatever. I want the equivalent of a 21-inch monitor in my shirt pocket.
