The other day [livejournal.com profile] celticdragonfly pointed out a fire ant nest in the yard. I promptly applied poison. Step one was whacking the nest with a hoe so the poison could get into the middle of it, with the usual ant swarm afterwards. Except it also had winged ants. A whole bunch of queens and drones, ready to found new colonies all over the neighborhood. The nest is dead now, so hopefully I got them all before the mating flight. Good timing.

...and assuming the location of the nest allows it, you can get quite a satisfactory result from pouring a jar of gasoline into the nest, and then applying a match.

It's fun, but it generally only kills the mound. The nest is way below ground. Takes the higher tech stuff to kill that. Or a LOT more gas. :-)

Possession of fireworks carries a $2000 fine right now. Texas is having a very dry summer. I suspect someone would come by to complain, especially after it spread to the next block.

Nuke the site from orbit. It's the only way to be sure.
