Yesterday the DFW Browncoats had their monthly Shindig. Since there were a bunch of Fort Worth folks interested in attending we had a second gathering there at the Ol South Pancake House at I-30 and University. Attendance got a boost from people who were energized by the Can't Stop the Serenity showing and wanted to do more Firefly stuff.

[livejournal.com profile] celticdragonfly and I were there with the littles ones. Ruth Ann organized the gathering. I knew her from the old Dallas Browncoats board--she'd been over to our place for a game day and some other shindigs. Unfortunately that group faded away so we're on the Yahoo list now.

The only other person I knew from before was Burke, who I met at CSTS. One of the main organizers of that was Tara, who's now getting sucked into the vortex of all sorts of fannish stuff. She was there with her friend Monet, who'd also worked CSTS. I was sitting next to Renee and Jason. On the other side was [livejournal.com profile] captnann and her husband Charlie with their boy Alex, who was playing nicely with Maggie and Jamie by the end of the Shindig.

The biggest contingent was from the USS Joshua, a local Star Trek (et al) fan club. Tim was there but I missed the other names, sorry guys. There were five of them so we had a 14 adults and four kids all told.

It started out quietly as we all wrapped ourselves around our pancakes. That's a good restaurant, I'll have to go back sometime. [livejournal.com profile] celticdragonfly wants to go back when she's not on a no-dairy diet restriction. Ann's husband (wish I could remember his name . . . ) suggested we all go around and introduce ourselves. So we took turns telling who we were, what our fandoms were, and what we did. This got us all talking to each other, and brought out lots of comments about who loves/hates which show and who goes to which con. Lots of people were involved in ren faire or SCA. Battlestar Galactica brought out strong feelings--there's still fans of the original out there who think the new one is heresy. I did my part to urge people to go to [livejournal.com profile] fencon.

The regular meetup is at Cafe Brazil in Richardson, but I hope we have the FTW Shindig every so often--I can't get up that far normally and it was great seeing browncoats again.

EDIT: Fixed the names I missed on the first pass, thanks Tara and [livejournal.com profile] captnann.

I agree, the FW Shindig was a lot of fun! Anyone (on this side of the verse) who wanted to be there but missed it should try and make it next time. I counted a total of 14 adults (5 visiting from the USS Joshua) and 4 children, for 19 people in attendance. The food at Ol' South was very enjoyable, and having the private room was excellent. There was also a lot of cross-over involvement from the SCA, Ren Faires (Scarborough in particular), and the other SF group in the area, the USS Joshua.

Oh, and my DH is Charlie, son is Alex. We're also considering flying over to dock up with the Josua folks for their monthly gathering in a couple of weeks (http://www.ussjoshua.org). We went once, and it was well organized plus the members were friendly and supportive.

We also talked about FenCon coming in Sept. 12-23 (www.fencon.org), and the Lazy Dragon Con, Aug. 3-5 (www.lazydragon.com), and the Browncoat Cruise in Dec 2007 (http://fireflydvd.com/browncoatcruise/lib/news.html).

I wish Cafe Brazil wasn't so far, but at least now folks in this part of the verse had a nice place to meet and greet. Shiny! Let's do this again! Okay, gotta go screen a few prospective clients. ;-)

See y'all in the verse!

It was such a meet-up!
I thank you so much for educating myself on all things SF!
I recognized most of the people from CSTS but knew very few names, other from my reviews of ticket purchases that night. lol
The friend that was to my right is Monet. She helped out with CSTS.
To her right was the before mentioned Burke, I met him at CSTS as well.
He has a great suede browncoat.
I look forward to all things Star Trek and sci-fi later in the month!

Sounds like you had a great turnout. We had 6 at the Cafe Brazil location. One thing we talked about was starting to look ahead to the next Saturday shindig and finding a location that would work for those Browncoats in Dallas and all those who went to the Ol South FW shindig. We seemed to be in agreement that perhaps we can find a restaurant along 183 in Irving that would be an easy-to-find location that would be a halfway point between us Browncoats 'in the east' and those of you 'in the west.' And we thought that if we started chatting about it in the group now, we could come up with a restaurant now so it wouldn't be a last minute thing that gets tossed around the week before that Saturday.

We have used the Main Streed Bakery in Grapevine several times and have gotten good turnouts, but it is a bit north for some. If people like something a little more central along Airport Freeway there are several places. I have suggested Fuddruckers and Green's North Main Barbecue in Euless before. Any other suggestions?

Irving, Grapevine, and Euless are all good for us.
