Kinda disappointing. I was hoping for actual historic women. The medieval Scandinavians had a few, like the queen who was too devoted to the Gods to marry "St" Olav. He slapped her, called her a whore, and provoked a war.

I was also hoping for actual historic women. As a certified pednat and geek, I recall that the queen whom Olaf slapped didn't refuse to marry him. She said that she was willing to consider his suit, if he followed his God and she followed hers. Also, that was Olaf Tryggvason, not Olaf Haraldsson -- it was Haraldsson who got declared a saint. Both were viking chiefs of royal blood who became king of Norway and tried to Christianize it; neither was very big on turning the other cheek. So it's easy to get them mixed up.

I took on the persona of the wife of a prosperous yeoman, trying to see whether something new would come up. I was a yeoman's wife, not a merchant's wife or jarl's daughter, so I guess the answer is right, but I would have liked to see something new. There were bigshots in Viking Scandinavia who ranked below jarl, after all.

And since this isn't really the Viking Age, I don't have to go berserk if someone calls me "Karl's wife." Do you know that scene in the Saga of Burnt Njal where an attempted peace settlement breaks down when one man accuses another of being the passive partner is same-sex marriage with a troll?
