selenite0: (software sucks)
A couple weeks ago I got tapped to compare a couple of configuration reports, ie find the differences between two fairly similar 10MB text files. I was specifically told to use MS Access since that's what we use to store this kind of info. So I started wrestling with the user interface to get it to tell me what I needed to know. After a week I gave up. Went to B&N and bought a SQL book. In two days I managed to learn enough SQL coding to produce the reports I couldn't get the GUI to give me at all.

I don't even want to know how much Microsoft is getting paid to make databases even more difficult to use.

In their defense, I suspect MS Access makes it really easy for a sales manager to tell how much product his troops are moving, but it's so focused on that it's unusable for any other application.

One of those moments that make you love working in defense procurement. We've come up with a cost-saving option for the first aircraft. Instead of buying ammo for it we're going to lease some from the Navy.
