celticdragonfly pointed out a fire ant nest in the yard. I promptly applied poison. Step one was whacking the nest with a hoe so the poison could get into the middle of it, with the usual ant swarm afterwards. Except it also had winged ants. A whole bunch of queens and drones, ready to found new colonies all over the neighborhood. The nest is dead now, so hopefully I got them all before the mating flight. Good timing.
