Another Meme
May. 19th, 2009 08:46 amThough it's not called a meme when the site is asking . . .
Have you ever met or known someone who has the same name as you (first and last) but is not a relative?
There's a few guys out there with my name. I traded email with one who found me through Google. He was a Celtic pagan / historical re-enactor / aerospace engineer with kids. Fortunately we were on opposite sides of the planet or there'd be no telling us apart.
He said all his friends had declared that he was the evil twin. I wasn't going to argue.

Date: 2009-05-19 03:39 pm (UTC)I do get a small amount of mail from people, thinking that I am he. And that I have have some kind of mysterious pull with NASA and can get things done for them. Like internships. And approving their wacked schemes for space launch.
Not so many since I splashed 'I am not the Brian Dunbar who works at NASA' on my blog.

Date: 2009-05-19 05:45 pm (UTC)It is AMAZING how much crap mis-directed e-mail I get, though, from people trying to reach Barbara, Betty, Bill, Bob, etc. Tripp ... this used to be primarily an AOL thing (they were BTRIPP###, but somehow the ### got lost in communicating with their friends), and I would get all sorts of crap ... hell, some of these folks were such morons that they evidently didn't understand that the ### was an essential part of their e-mail address and would sign up for stuff with my e-mail account ... not being a saint, there are a few "BTRIPPs" out there on things like Classmates.com (having the registered e-mail address makes it easy to get the password, after all) where it now clearly states that said person "is too damn stupid to be allowed near a computer"!
There are a few "Brendan Tripp" folks out there, two other ones on Facebook, for example (one is from New Zealand and one is apparently a meerkat in a smoking jacket), but the one that has to find me irritating is a preacher that has "Brendan" as a middle name, but uses it all the time.

There's a few others running around loose -- I think one was involved in a paper about military uses of velcro.
