I've been trying to get the health insurance company to reimburse us for the midwife expenses. Finally got a clear answer:

Blue Cross/Blue Shield friendly phone center lady: "Your policy guidelines only cover births at a hospital or birthing center, not at home."
Me: "So if we'd chosen the more expensive option you'd pay for it?"
BC/BS FPCL: "Right."

I want to get health insurance the way I get car insurance. From somebody who wants to make *me* happy, not the corporate accountants.

Oh, well. Jamie's worth it.

I'm of a mixed mind when it comes to birthing at home. On one hand it's a wonderful experience, OTOH if the situation gets pear-shaped, it's nice to know you can get a c-section Right Now.

For the record, our insurance wouldn't pay for a Doula either. :(

I think it depends on the balance of risks. On the one hand, the danger of problems requiring immediate medical intervention. On the other, iatrogenic infections and OBs more worried about how a decision will look to a malpractice jury than how it'll affect the patient. Having a midwife who showed up with enough gear to stock a small clinic helped. Homebirth was great for us but I won't dispute that there's women who have to be in the hospital.

Ah. Sounds like your mid-wife is well prepared. I had thoughts in mind more along when my parents were born. Which admittedly was around 1922 and 1934 respectively.
