[livejournal.com profile] celticdragonfly just returned from a visit to the secondhand kids clothes store. After getting everything settled she got the bag and said "Want to see what I got?" I'm an experienced enough husband to realize that the correct answer to this is "yes." So while Brendan read comic books and Jamie played on the floor I nodded approvingly as she showed me a bunch of overalls she'd found for Jamie. She had to hold them up high because Maggie was right there wanting to grab hold for a closer look at them, even though she was told they weren't for her. Then out came the prize, a purple dress with lace trim and embroidered snowflakes. Maggie was delighted and wanted to try it on immediately. So now she's wandering around in the dress and showing it off to me. I don't think I've ever so excited by new clothes that I had to try them on right away, even spiffy dress-up garb. So is that just me or is it a boy-girl thing?

And then when we tried to get her to take them off, she said repeatedly and loudly, "No thank you! No thank you!"

Sigh. It's so sweet. Why couldn't I have had all girls?

Girls and boys

both have their charms, though, I must admit to a bit of a prejudice in favor of girls: They're more catholic readers (though I know one boy who knows who General Jinjur is and why she's cool).

Heh. You could've had a girl like me, you know, all the woes of snips-and-snails-and-puppy-dogs-tails, broken bones and mess and fights and none of the Maggie-sweetnesses--!

Besides, boys never go through that God-awful mean-girl-self-dramatizing-clique-thing in middle school.

That's the fault of middle school, not gender. Grrr. Middle school is eeevil.

General Jinjur! And the KNITTING NEEDLES!

It's both: it's you, and it's a boy / girl thing.

It's you because you're a boy and you know, culturally speaking, that no clothing meant for you is worth getting excited over.

However, many girls know how clothing can be a mood-enhancing drug if done right, so they get excited immediately.

Clothes as costume

I think both boys and girls get into that one! I know I adored "dress up"; my only difficulties were the limited number of options ("No pirates? no musketeers? no fairy princesses?" Not with three children and two dependent parents on an L.C.'s salary, my dear! BunnyBright(TM) will so not have that problem.

Surely by now Brendan has gotten, oh, a cowboy or pirate or Spider-man costume that he's worn everywhere?

Brendan has a cowboy and a pirate outfit he's very fond of. But he's never reacted as quickly as Maggie did, and never to mundane clothes. So I still was surprised by her reaction.

Heck, I still do that. I remember when I made my wedding veil, I wore it around the house on Christmas day. There are pictures of me and Aaron opening presents, and I'm in jeans, turtleneck, and wedding veil.
