Just had a company all-hands meeting. The executive was showing us pretty slides of what other parts of the company are doing. One was about the new NASA Crew Exploration Vehicle. I took one look at it and thought Guys, if you want a Soyuz you know where to find it.

I confess a morbid amount of curiousity at seeing the design.

NGC hasn't put it out on the web, at least not anywhere I can find it. But it's pretty much a Soyuz with an escape rocket and smaller solar panels.

(Snork) Remember when we used to accuse Russia of copying *our* designs??

I'm starting to think that NASA is a black hole for imagination.

Well, y'know those Soviets know nothing about human spaceflight or maintaining long-term station projects. :/

Typical Russian utilitarian design

The Soyuz ain't pretty, and I've heard ain't comfortable, but it just works. Reminds me in a way of the A-10 Warthog. Ugly ugly ugly ugly ugly, but can still fly even after being shot to hell.

The Soviets were kind of the anti-Japanese when it comes to elegance.

Selenite, what do you think about the safety claims of the Soyuz design vs. the Shuttle design?

I think the Soyuz has the honesty to not claim to be very safe . . .

My views on the Shuttle are here:

Totally OT:

Did you know that you and my younger brother share a birthday, different years, mind, but I find it interesting all the same!

Oh, I noticed you had added me, it's been reciprocated :)
