From [livejournal.com profile] joyeuse13:

1. Leave a comment saying you want to be interviewed.
2. I will respond by asking you five questions.
3. You'll update your journal with my five questions and your five answers.
4. You'll include this explanation.
5. You'll ask other people five questions when they want to be interviewed.
(3 - 5 are, of course, optional)

Here are her questions to me, and my answers:

Why are you a Unitarian?

At this point I'm not one. I'd looked at UU as an option for someone who doesn't fit with the major monotheistic beliefs, but still wants a solid community to be part of. As much as I love the power of well-done pagan ritual I've never found a pagan group with a building they have sunday school classes in. So the stability of the UUs was attractive. But their ritual is so flat that it's hard to get any feeling of spirituality with them, and I've got a lot of qualms about what they'd be teaching our kids. So right now I'm looking elsewhere, and don't know whether I'll be back to the UUs.

Where does your user name come from? What do you want to be when you grow up?

Greek, meaning "of the moon." My original career goal was to be chief engineer on a lunar base (in those pre-Challenger days when that seemed likely in my lifetime). I'm still fond of the Moon as a goal for space exploration (and will out-argue anyone who'll talk up Mars instead), but it's not a personal goal any more. I'm probably about as grown-up as I'm going to get, and I want to be an engineer and father, just with a nicer project and office, and all the debts paid off so I can buy the kids more toys.

What aspirations do you have for your children?

That they be free to choose their own path. My political rants mostly revolve around potential threats to that freedom. I'm sure as they get older I'll notice all sorts of potential talents that they shouldn't let go to waste, but hopefully I'll be able to keep from annoying them too much about it. Going to MIT is definitely optional.

Giving them the freedom to pick which planet they want to live on would be good.

If you could go to any one place in the world, where would it be?

[livejournal.com profile] celticdragonfly has praised Caernarvon Castle to me and I'd like to see it for real.

1. "What was your original motivation for joining the SCA?"
I was a college freshman, 17 years old. I spent most of a semester in a class in Fine Hand Bookbinding debating the relative merits of the SCA and my special interests group (which I had joined at age 14), the Mythopoeic Society. I had gone to a musical evening with the SCA on campus, and thought it was pretty cool, but didn't really get hooked until going to Beltane Coronation at the start of A.S. VIII. Most of my life, I had lived in a fantasy world. This was my fantasy, come to life. And the people accepted me and (quel horreur!) liked me. Having people like you is very seductive.

2. "What things about California are better than Texas?"
My parents are here. I have a friends base in the SCA that is very welcoming that I was never able to establish in Texas. The weather is better. Æddie.

3. "What things about Texas are better than California?"
Central Market. Cost of housing and gasoline. Cultural things--ballet, symphony, opera, museums--are very accessible. There are neat, affordable things for kids to do. Sense of history. My church. People are naturally friendly. Less smog.

4. "What aspirations do you have for your children?
Oh, that's a stinker. For them to be healthy, happy, and morally strong. Beyond that, to be able to support themselves in a legal and interesting manner. Yes, I would love to have them rich, but as others have said before me, money may not buy happiness, but the lack of money will certainly interfere with it!

5. "What is your favorite song?"
I don't have one. The one that I sing to myself (and God) when I feel the urge to sing, but don't know what I want to sing, is a Gloria from the Taize collection. In fact, I really like a lot of the Taize stuff. I really dislike much of modern church music, but that's standout stuff. So far as popular music goes, I am very fond of the Lee Ann Womack song, "I Hope You Dance" ( http://www.lyrics007.com/Lee%20Ann%20Womack%20Lyrics/I%20Hope%20You%20Dance%20Lyrics.html ) In fact, plug those lyrics into my response for Question 4...

I'd have to place this statement as #1 Fantastic Dad Dreams for their Children, of all time.
