The only politics my husband Patrick will admit to is libertarianism. (This is the man who doesn't vote because he swears anyone who wants political office should be kept out for that reason alone. He also doesn't vote in order to avoid jury duty.) I don't agree with skipping out on the right to vote, but I do agree with him on many other things.
We are socially liberal. But I don't think anybody we know well would call us "hedonistic". :)
And just how does he think he deserves any of the benefits of citizenship?
There's someone who needs to go seriously study what conditions are like in other countries, and how much better we have it than most of the world. He should do his civic duty.
Sorry, dear, I love you, but I think he's acting very wrongly.
Plus, his strategy to avoid jury duty is going to fail him soon.... The jury pool is now taken from more public records than just the voters registration rolls... including drivers license and property tax.
So, he might as well vote.
Heinlein said something like "If you can't decide for whom to vote, go on down to the polling place. There's usually people advocating for one candidate or another. Listen for a while and pick out the biggest fathead, and vote against his candidate."
Hey, hey, I said I don't agree. I research the candidates and vote, thank you. (And I enjoy the prospect of jury duty. I would serve more often if they would let me.)
I am not particularly patriotic but I do that much.
I am not trying to defend his behavior. Just questioning what the article defines as libertarian, because that model and Pat don't match. :)
