For the past couple of months I've been working on a Firefly card game. [livejournal.com profile] celticdragonfly inspired me to come up with the idea and has been putting lots of work into designing the cards. Lots of other friends helped playtest it--thanks, [livejournal.com profile] desert_vixen, [livejournal.com profile] jazz007, [livejournal.com profile] kd5mdk, [livejournal.com profile] sambear, [livejournal.com profile] sandy_tyras, and [livejournal.com profile] ulfrikr! So I finally polished it into maybe-publishable shape and sent an email to Eden Studios ([livejournal.com profile] wilthoughts suggested them since they've done Whedonverse games and card games). A couple hours later they wrote back asking to see it. So tonight I print out a new set of cards and mail them out. The odds are the answer will be "It's cool, but not cool enough to justify begging Fox for permission," but it'd be great if it did get published.

And if it doesn't, we can still play a few rounds the next time people come visit.

At least they thought it was cool enough for them to see. Most things don't get that far.

Thanks!

This is much faster than I expected. Last night was spent on banging out a cover letter and printing out a new set of cards.

BTW, I know you've mostly done RPGs, but do you have any clues to share on the going rate for card games? "$0.03 a word" doesn't seem to translate well for this.

Thanks, I hope so. I just Fedexed it (2-day) so he'll have it on the weekend to play with his buds. Hopefully they'll have a good time.

You go, boy! Nothing [ad]ventured, nothing gained. There is literally nothing to use and everything to gain. You've just handed them a great licence-able product exactly in enough time to get it into stores by the feature film's release.

What can more can I wish for you but Success and... Serenity!

Don't know if it'll be out by the movie. I doubt it given what I've seen of other publishing timelines. Or maybe I've just been driven into cynicism by GURPS Vorkosigan.

Now if they decide to make a movie trilogy out of it they could certainly have it ready for the next one . . .

So, when do we get out playtester copies? ;-)

Probably a few weeks after it comes off the presses . . .

Way to go, Karl! You've definitely motivated me to do bigger and better things with my time, though what they are I don't know just yet. I hope everything goes well.

Would you print up a set of cards for Mom, Dad, and me? I'm sure they'd like to beta test it just as much as I would. (Can you "beta test" a card game, or does the term apply exclusively to video games? My roots in English rearing their ugly heads again...)

With paper games it's "blindtesting". You get to figure it out just from the rules I wrote instead of having me there to explain what I meant.

I'm going to print some more decks but I'm not sure when. I've been having trouble getting the quality I want out of the inkjet printer. Next step may be to go down to Kinko's and say "how much for 32 color copies on cardstock?" but I don't know if that's going to be affordable. But I promise when I get a set of decks made you will get one.
