Disney Does Bondage
Apr. 26th, 2005 10:40 amIn PTOC sequel Captain Jack Sparrow is hog-tied to a roasting spit.
I'm trying to visualize the story conference behind that scene.
"We're going to have to have some serious BSDM imagery or we'll lose the slashers, and that's our core audience."
"Yeah, but how can we sneak that into the movie without losing the mainstream public?"

BTW I predict this is going to make many, many POTC fans happy: http://scifi.com/scifiwire2005/index.php?id=30912

Date: 2005-04-26 05:19 pm (UTC)The "cannibal" issue seems to stem from a papal ruling that slavery was permissible only when cannibals were enslaved. The idea seems to have been that cannibalism made the cannibals sub-human, therefore Good Christians had a duty to subdue them and prevent their baser nature from being expressed, and that chattel slavery was a convenient way to do this.
Tribal leaders confronted with white slaving parties asking "Do you know any cannibals nearby?" had a huge economic incentive to lie and claim that their rival neighbors were cannibalistic, so they could move into their territories once the soi-disant cannibals were removed to their new Christian lives.
Apart from a few examples of ritual cannibalism and cases of famine, I seriously doubt that stereotypical cannibalism-as-food-source was ever practiced by any human peoples.
I sympathize with the Carib peoples, but I doubt there's anything they can do about such an ingrained cultural stereotype. If I were in charge over at Disney, I'd make sure there was nothing to identify the Carib people or their culture visible in the movie.
Apart from that, giving them a big cash injection by making the movie there is about the best thing the Caribs could hope for. 70% unemployment? Damn.
