Hollywood is making a big-screen version of Beowulf. And they just cast Angelina Jolie.

Since I only remember one female speaking part in the epic that makes it easy to guess who she's playing.

I'm sure David Weber would say she's perfect for the part.

It's been too long since I read Beowulf, but doesn't Wealtheow (sp?) get a speaking part? I don't remember whether Grendel's mother speaks or just fights.

Not that you can trust Hollywood to make the movie resemble the book.

She played Alexander's mother in Alexander.

So is it typecasting then?

Um, has there been a run-in between her and Weber? I live under a rock.

Not in person, no. Weber (along with many other parents) battled for years to adopt Cambodian orphans over the resistance of the local and American bureaucracies, while Jolie got some hand-delivered by the US Gov when she had the whim. He's cranky about this. His description:

I don't buy the Hollywood Billionaire + U.N.-rep. uses clout to adopt third-world child as a good enough reason to loathe Jolie, esp. since she followed it up with another adoption of another needy child. Dislike and resent a bit, yeah, but that's it.

INS, though, sure, happy to pile on the hate there. The one sympathy I have for illegals is that the folks who respect our laws have to deal with INS to get here - and that'd drive anyone to crime.

I think the equation is hollywood + clout + way too many fans praising her to him = loathing. Plus it's a lot easier to plot revenge on an actress than the government.

Actually, I think she is not Grendel's mother but Beowulf's love interest.

I didn't realize what was Weber's beef with Jolie, since anybody who's seen SKY CAPTAIN seems to think she would make the perfect casting for HH. However, I think I can see his point. More the Gummint's dirty deed than hers really, but I'd be cranky too.

Life after Grendel

They might just carry Beowulf's story through to his tragic death fighting the dragon. That'd give Jolie the role of his wife.
